2016 – A Year of Changes, Advances, and Fun!

Greetings to all, and welcome back to St. Andrew’s Noble Order of Royal Scots in this, the Year of Our Lord, 2016!

We hope you are prepared, once again, to journey forth to experience the wonderment and joy, and even the magnificence that is this hobby and passion we call Historical Re-enactment! If you are a returning Volunteer, whether this is your second year or second decade with us, we are most pleased to have you back. If this is your first full year with us, then welcome – we hope you are prepared for a full calendar of education and entertainment! A season or two filled with pomp and circumstance, and multitudes of Her Grace’s loyal subjects eager to experience all that is Her Court here in 1562. And if you are simply returning to visit Her Grace at one of her many stops during her travels around this generally warm corner of Scotland we call Northern California, be most welcome! After all, it is for YOU that all we loyal subjects to Her Grace, Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland, First of Her Name, partake in this hobby we love so! After all, without your patronage, we – and the wonderful Scottish and Celtic events that graciously host us – could not and would not exist!

We are most excited to announce that we once again have a full schedule for the upcoming year – and at a good, steady pace at that! Of course, all this is available on Her Grace’s schedule found on the website calendar, but indulge me while I recap our intended progress this fine year… We will start, as always, in just over a month celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Sonora Celtic Festival. A month later, in early April, will be the Tartan Day Festivities as hosted by the East Bay Scots. Next, assuming no issues arise, will follow the Modesto Scottish Games on the first Saturday in June. After that, just a few weeks later, we are pleased to be attending the first of what we are sure will be many grand Scottish Games hosted by the Mother Lode Scots! With those four events out of the way, Her Grace shall take her leave of travels for a bit to escape the unseasonable heat of July… (Volunteers, that’s the cue for our annual summer POOL PARTY!)

Of course, that period of rest will just be to prepare for the second season of Her travels for 2016! We shall kick off the latter part of the year with the always wonderful Monterey Scottish Games in early August and the biggest event of them all, the Pleasanton Scottish Games on Labor Day weekend. After this, we head to the beautiful forest setting of the Celtic Music Festival, put on by our friends at KVMR in early October, for Her Grace’s last official Court stop of the year before retiring for the holidays to grand Edinburgh! And last – if you look very closely, you may also find many of us masquerading as mysterious other characters at the All Hallows Fantasy Faire in late October. After all, even Nobles need to dress up and play someone else every now and again!

So make your plans now to come join us at one or more of these events. Her Grace’s travels through Scottish California in 2016 have something almost every month to experience – and new Volunteers are always welcome… But visits from you, our dear guests, are even more welcome! So on that note, I bid you adieu – until we meet again!

2015 Training Recap

Good day, one and all,

As most of our members are aware, we have completed our Guild training schedule for 2015. As a part of this, there were a few handouts used in the activities of this most wonderful training, and I am happy to include them here for your easy Reference. Please note that the Gallowglass info is cut and paste from Wikipedia as a placeholder until a better write-up is provided:

Also, during the vocalization exercises, two books were mentioned as references – they would be the following two books (note, these are NOT yet correctly linked to give the Guild click-through credit. Hopefully a banner ad will be forthcoming soon…):

One of the Summer 2015 goals for this website is to expand our Member area to include more information from our various trainings. As this progresses, this simple post will expand to a wonderful new section of this website, and should include everything from Character Development to Costuming Guidance to period Dance Information for our Dance Show. But for now, as long as you click on Training Posts, our newest addition to the menu above, it will find any posts we have (currently two, including this one) related to training… Please, as always, have patience with you dear webmaster – the life of an Earl is a busy one, indeed!

April and May mean School Events!

Every Spring, St. Andrews has the pleasure of going out and bring the Renaissance to life for seventh graders at various schools throughout the Bay Area and Central Valley. We have completed our first two, Excelsior Middle School in Byron and St. Mary’s School in Gilroy, and our members had a wonderful time sharing our love of history. Now, we have two more events coming up, an old favorite and a first time new event!

First up, on Friday May 8, 2015, we will be making our first visit to George Kelly Elementary School in Tracy. Then the following Monday May 11, we will be travelling out to King City to visit the Duchy of Chalone Peaks (also known as Chalone Peaks Middle School).

Read all about our adventures in the May edition of The Scroll, available right here!

And here we go again!

Hello gentles, one and all,

It is indeed that time of the year again, where we kick off a grand new Faire season by welcoming Her Majesty, Mary Stuart, back from France to take her rightful place as Queen of Scotland in this, the year of our Lord, Fifteen and Sixty-Two. And then just a short week after, we are off to visit her subjects as we celebrate all things Celtic at the 29th Annual Sonora Celtic Faire

For more information on the Welcoming Ceremony on Saturday, February 28, see our February scroll here.

To learn all about our busiest weekend of the year, read up on all the Sonora Celtic Faire details see the March scroll here.

Her Majesty hopes to see you at both events, so get out your finest of clothing and jewelry, put yourself in the mindset to travel back with us to 1562, and come join the fun!

About ready to go live…

Well, this whole site update thing got off to a great start, then, as Faire season ramped into high gear and live got busy and complicated, it ran into a figurative brick wall…  But I am now happy to say that, after several months of behind the scenes tweaking, teaching myself WordPress, and learning just what the hell the differences are between normal HTML and Responsive web site coding (compare the “Contacts” or “In the News” pages between your desktop and your cell phone, and you’ll get the general idea!), I’m happy to announce this, the final beta of the new and improved website!  Please poke around at all the stuff; go ahead and compare it’s predecessor (still at the old site) to what I’ve morphed it into…

Yes, there are a few things that have disappeared – for example, the Guildhouses that are not my actual Guildhouse are just blank placeholders until I find out who else is doing what, and when.  But try this out on various browsers – even though I currently have this open in Chrome, Firefox, IE and Opera on my desktop, and Firefox, Chrome and Dolphin on my Android, there’s several dozen other browsers and different versions of the browsers I’m using to test this on that are begging to prove Mr. Murphy and his law right…

But hopefully you’ll look, then look harder, and still find absolutely nothing wrong…  Because I’m ready to take a break from copying old website stuff, and am ready to try a few things new!

Welcome to the new test website for Saint Andrew’s Noble Order of Royal Scots

Well, we’re already into 2014, with the Sonora Celtic Faire under our belts.  As the old website hasn’t gotten any significant TLC in recent years, I decided to teach myself WordPress and bring the entire site to a new look, a new style.  Hopefully, you’ll find this new site easier to use, both on the desktop and on mobile devices.  If not, I promise you I’ll go buy WordPress for Dummies and fix it…  So go ahead and leave me any comments on what you see – literally everything is open game at this point in time!
